SEFTIM considers that the most important lightning protection is to protect people.

Get the message about how to protect themselves and the very fact that it is possible to protect yourself is not always easy even in countries where associations such as National Lightning Safety Institute in USA work every day in that direction.

An action that seems effective is to begin with the training of children knowing that they will get the message to their parents.

In this context, SEFTIM presented at the National Library in Maputo, books for children written in the Portuguese official language.

This action was undertaken with the support of Guido Carmargo Potier Universidade Catolica do Rio Gande do Sul in Brazil, who works actively for the protection of children

A seminar for students of the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo allowed to present all the lightning protection aspects: from the lightning physics to the lightning protection means.

Many questions were asked by the fifty students present: what to do when one is outside, where best to be protected?

Mozambique is a country very concerned about lightning protection with an ambitious program, especially for schools outside the cities.

Cooperation with the University should continue with joint projects.

A specific seminar enabled the Ministry of Education of Mozambique to better understand the opportunities offered by lightning protection technics for buildings.

After an introduction to the lightning phenomenon, protection means and their possibilities were presented (surge protectiev devices , lightning rod , thunderstorm warning systems … ) .

Finally a discussion of the needs of the department has identified areas for studies and the most urgent real needs.

For now the Ministry wants to solve problems existing in the field and also to implement a protection policy on new or existing facilities ( schools …) .

The meeting ended with a visit to a site that is frequently struck by lightning and a lightning study is to be launched.

In order to meet the needs of the overseas departement & territory (Réunion & Mayotte)  and with a strong keraunic density (Madagascar & Maurice Island), Seftim is proud to open an office on Maurice Island.

From October, 27th to 31th, SEFTIM took part to a plenary assembly in Lisbon.

Alain Rousseau has been designate as president of the standard’s international commitee. This meeting was also the occasion to congratulate the outgoing president, Mr Brachl (Austrian) and celebrate the 25 birthday of the commitee.

From October, 13th to October, 17th, SEFTIM took part to ICLP 2014 (International Conference on Lightning Protection) in Shanghai.

During this conference, SEFTIM presented 5 papers and animated a workshop on “Lightning Protection and Lightning Testing Standard”.

Moreover, SEFTIM was members of the conference’s “Technical Programm Comitee”

Seftim went during 15days in China (Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi’an, Wenzhou) in order to develop cooperation on research, trial and standards. This was the opportunity of interesting visits as much on trial as on lightning protection production. This was also the opportunity to define research line and to realize introduction with a conference with more than 100 peoples.

Seftim take part to the inaugural session of the electric association of Yueqing. This association of more than 70 members represents 80% of the lightning protection producer from this region. This region also represent 50% of all the chinese lightning protection production. The aim of this association is to make cooperate different producer especially to pool research & trial means. Seftim give a speach at this occasion to celebrate this creation. This inaugural session was covered by press and televisions.

From September, 2nd to the 4th, Seftim organized a training session to lightning protection for explosive warehouse in Manchester.

The Qualifoudre V3.3 reference is practicable since 2014, July . The reference also indicates that the trainers have to be certified as level 1 and their missions controlled by a level 2. The level 1 certified are trained by a level 3 from the company or a level 4 external to the company. Their training doesn’t have to date for more than 3 years. Level 2 or 3 certified are trained by a level 4 who could be external to the company. In this case, Seftim developed an adapted training program :

• Level 1 – Training (Q1) stated initial of 2 days

and

• Level 2 & 3 (Q2 and Q3ARF) – deal in depth training (Technical study, set-up, check-up and Lightning Risks Analysis) of 2 days also as requested in the certification demands.
