A 2 days Technical Seminar in Fontainebleau

FontainebleauTechnical development and standards are constantly evolving and it is important for the technical staff as well as for business engineers that they constantly master these issues and anticipate at best the changes. For this purpose, a 2-day seminar brought together most of our available Parisian players to discuss the latest technical developments . The seminar was held in the imperial city of Fontainebleau, allowing us to concentrate for two days outside of the Parisian pressure.

The topics concerned people protection, the various types of Lightning Protection System , surge protective devices and earthing systems. How to check the protection means in field is becoming increasingly complex , and was also one of the topic addressed.

2016 Lightning Conferences

SEFTIM will participe this year to 2 main international lightning conférences : ILPS in Porto in April and ICLP at Lisbon in September. For lightning it is the Portugal year !

Participation to the French Association for Lightning Protection 2015 Forum

GolffromProfCabaneThree members of SEFTIM attended the 2015 Forum of the APF (XIV Forum) which brought together more than 40 people at the headquarters of FIEEC rue Hamelin in Paris . The APF forum is an annual opportunity to talk about lightning protection to the general public but also to bring together experts to talk about various  but still innovative topics.

SEFTIM presented two topics: one in cooperation with Professor CABANE, well known Keraunopathologist and another with CEA (in bold in the list below)

This year, themes were:

 

  • Protections à mettre en œuvre pour réduire les champs électromagnétiques rayonnés par la foudre.
  • Protection coaxiale calculée techniquement plutôt que de façon empirique
  • Prise en compte de contraintes plus sévères que la norme pour les matériels de protection foudre
  • Un cas exemplaire de foudroiement d’un randonneur
  • Le risque foudre chez les golfeurs
  • Ce qu’apporte la modélisation à l’évaluation de la protection foudre d’une structure
  • Précautions particulières à prendre en compte pour la protection des installations photovoltaïques
  • Chasseur d’orages- Temps D’orages les orages en Espagne (climatologie, comportement)
  • Détection des orages violents

SEFTIM – Safety !

SEFTIM will soon be 50 years old. We are very proud of this longevity but the name SEFTIM has no more the same meaning that when it was created. We moved from a Société d’Etudes et de Fabrication des Techniques Modernes (Company for study and manufacturing of modern techniques) to an international company making studies in the lightning protection field. We kept our development and manufacturing knowledge when the needed products don’t exist in the market. We also have maintained and developed our EMC knowhow coming from the embarked equipment technology (mainly in aircrafts). SEFTIM is by now a brand. Our international development pushed us to make the brand SEFTIM more international. It then appeared clearly that SEFTIM sound is similar to « SAFETY ». And this is what we are doing: enhance the safety of the sites that we are protecting des sites whether it is for petroleum, nuclear, explosive or even historical buildings.

SEFTIM New Caledonia becomes member of the Power Association

ppa_logoThe PPA is an inter-governmental agency and member of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) to promote the direct cooperation of the Pacific island power utilities in technical training, exchange of information, sharing of senior management and engineering expertise and other activities of benefit to the members.

The PPA’s objective is to improve the quality of power in the region through a cooperative effort among the utilities, private sector and regional aid donors.

The PPA’s members pool their resources and expertise for their common benefit, gain international representation and improve access to international power sector assistance programmes.

 

SEFTIM will thus share its expertise in the field of lightning protection of electrical networks.

SEFTIM China created !

To continue its growth in exports and also to take into account that SEFTIM was very active in China for many years, SEFTIM officially opened an office in China in Shanghai.

In these modern and well located premises (10 km from Pudong Airport, 20 km from the center of Shanghai) a team of 3 people will develop studies and training in China. SEFTIM China will of course receive technical support from SEFTIM particularly during the development phase. Chinese courses will be given in 2016 to everyone at SEFTIM Paris to obtain a minimum of varnish and to be able to intervene in China for technical support.

Some studies are already foreseen: petroleum industry sites, explosives sites and a village that is very severely and frequently struck by lightning. See also other news about Tibet.

The inauguration took place in the presence of about thirty officials including the CMA who came specifically from different provinces and also of course from Beijing. The day was studious but also festive with, as it should be in China, fireworks!

SEFTIM on the roof of the world

Due to its activities in China, SEFTIM has been invited by CMA to participate to a workshop with the aim to determine the best protection solutions for the Potala Palace in Tibet. A 3 days trip in Tibet has allowed to visit this historical monument and determine its specificities:

  • The walls are made of stone covered by insulating material.
  • The roof has a wooden structure and there are many wooden poles inside the structure. A lot of flammable material such as books, carpets, electrical circuit. A significant fire risk will be considered
  • Soil is very far and can be seen only on the back side of the Palace. So making an earthing system will be a challenge and the distance between rods and earth will be long with a large separation distance).

 

 

Visiting the site is rather difficult due to the reduction of oxygen content (-40%) at this altitude and the quite numerous staircase both inside and outside of the structure.

2015 session of the electric association of Yueqing

Yueqing2015Since the inauguration in 2014, the SPD manufacturer association of Yueqing has further increased.

The session 2015 was the occasion to present many new projects by the participants showing the maturity of the local market and the innovation capacity of the local SPD manufacturers. The association represents more than 50 % of Chinese manufacturers surge protective devices.

This session was covered by the press and television.

Participants of SEFTIM presented two contributions: one related to the lightning risk analysis and another dealing with the future of the SPD technology and related standards.

This session was also an opportunity to present the China Electronics City, a huge showroom with storage and sale of equipment (SPD circuit breaker , switchgear … ) . This will be the largest structure of its kind in China and probably in the world.

The Shenzhen Meteorology (CMA) Tower experiment

The project is called Shenzhen Met Tower.

The project is including a 360m specifically built tower, a lightning simulating test laboratory and a research base.

Multi-methods to measure direct lightning current

Multi-directions to measure lightning

Multi-purposes lightning research

Lightning observation methods:

Direct current measurement

Electrical field measurement

Magnetic field measurement

Optical high speed video camera

Evaluation by Lightning location system

 

And OCT sensor:

  • Transfer the magnetic field to laser light intensity
  • Magnetic strength is linear with the laser light intensity
  • Insensitive to electromagnetic interference
