Lightning Protection Study in Gabon

Gabon-Elephant

SEFTIM is more and more present in Africa. After Botswana and Mozambique, this time SEFTIM experts were going to Gabon for working deep inside the forest. Climate was good neither too humid nor too hot allowing an efficient collect of data. The Lightning Protection Systems installed on the site has been studied, data collected for a further Lightning Risk Analysis and in-fine the Technical Study will allow to define the most adapted protection means.

The French law for environment (ICPE) of course doesn’t apply in Gabon but it was used as a guide for the steps to follow to define the needs. Besides, considering already recorded damage, protection means to protect operational risk will be taken into account. The need of an easy maintenance of the protection means is also an important criterion in the selection process at the time of the definition of the protection solutions.

Initial Inspection of 4 sites in Botswana

Botswana is a country with great wealth in flora and fauna. Lightning is also very important in the territory.

A preliminary lightning study was conducted locally to show what is the lightning density in the country.

Following this first step, data communications facilities located on high points on 4 sites (3 sites around the capital Gaborone and one more distant) were studied.

The Lightning Risk Analysis has shown the need to protect these four sites and a Technical Study has identified the means of protection, including Surge Protective Devices.

Once the installation done on site, initial inspection was conducted at each site in the presence of the installer to validate whether protections were installed correctly and if necessary define the corrective actions.

The four sites have been approved and are by now ready for lightning.

Lightning Protection training in Brittany

2015 was a good year for lightning protection training in Britany showing the interest of local manufacturers, users or contractors in this area.

Brittany is not necessarily the most severe region for lightning activity, but lightning strikes have usually severe energy and soil is usually based on granite leading to important consequences.

In addition, many manufacturers with sensitive activity are based in the area.

Two 2-days training perfomed in intra allowed to review the essential elements of protection and also to handle the specificities of the region and the sea effect.
